The "Vieilles Voiles de Rhuys" is an association governed by the French law of 1901 whose main goal is to protect and highlight the maritime cultural heritage of the Presqu'ile de Rhuys district..
Its head office is located at Kéret in the town of SARZEAU.
For the last fifteen years, the” Vieilles Voiles de Rhuys” have been lobbying actively for the preservation and promotion of the regional maritime heritage.
The association has more than 200 volunteers, including owners of old wooden boats and people who enjoy the restoration and conservation of old sailing ships.
Thus it has access to all the skills needed for the reconstruction and rigging of old wooden sailing boats. It has already to its credit, several projects, such as the restoration of dinghies, local flat-bottomed boats, sloops and cutters. As soon as the spring arrives, these boats sail together weekly on the Golfe du Morbihan and Quiberon Bay in the neighborhood of the islands of Houat and Hoëdic.
It researches and uses techniques which have been abandoned for several decades: from marine joinery to sail making, from caulking with oakum and coal tar to copper roving, as well as traditional rigging, and using linseed oil paints and mastic.
It organizes weekly seamanship workshops, from October to April.
It's group of 50 singers (25 women and 25 men) take parts in many different maritime events and festivals in the area.
Since 2010, its has brought to a successful conclusion the major project of restoring a fishing sloop named "Père Daniel" with the support of the “Fondation du Patrimoine“ and the town of Sarzeau.
This boat was re-launched in May 2012 and since then she has allowed us to practice traditional navigation skills off the coast of the Presqu’ île de Rhuys and on the Golfe du Morbihan. She is recognized as a boat of heritage interest.(B.I.P. Bateau d'intérêt patrimonial)
